I own many kinds of earmuffs; there is no way on god’s green earth that these are a 27 NRR. Very disappointing as Radians is an OK brand.I recently bought a pair of the Caldwell 497700, inexpensive (~$25) electronic earmuffs. They work pretty well and are rated 25 NRR. These were rated a little better, so I thought I’d try. Bad idea. So, to put batteries in, you have to pry off the earcups. When you do this, you see that the shell is basically empty with only a very thin piece of foam between your ears and the electronics/shell. Next, there is only one mic, so the sound is very directional. Next, it sounds like you’re listening through a tunnel or long pipe. Strange, but I could live with this. However, walking around, I could not detect any sound reduction/muffling. Finally, I took these to the range – they were like wearing nothing.Don’t waste your time with these. If you want inexpensive, go with the Caldwell. Otherwise, pony up the bucks and go with high end protection.

Even with other’s mediocre reviews I purchased these earmuffs since my son has a pair that I tried and liked.PRO: They work fine as far as sound protection goes. I have a different set of earmuffs that limit the amplitude of the sound whereas these actually cutoff at sounds above your “volume” setting (that is, to the limit of their reduction ability, as in not turned on at all). I’ve had mine turned up enough to be able to reasonably hear conversation and they briefly cutout (1/2 to 1 second?) even at the sound of used brass cartridge cases being tossed into a metal recycle can.CON: For me the muff extension slide rods are 1/4 inch too short if I wear a cap. The bottom edge of the plastic inside the rubber/foam cups of the ear pieces presses against the very bottom of my ears and after about half an hour becomes uncomfortable.NOTE: The product description says it uses 2 AA batteries in each muff for a total of four. But mine only takes two in the muff with the volume control with no provision/battery holder in the other. Maybe I have a newer or older version?UPDATE 9/16/12:After about 9 months of ownership and perhaps 10-20 hours of run time the batteries still operated the unit fine. I recall my fancy/expensive battery tester said they were at 80 percent capacity but I changed them anyway.

A pair of electronic earmuffs usually cost $100+. At this price, I gave it a try. The earmuffs are somewhat bulky but not heavy and generally comfortable. They provide nice noise insulation. I have no reason to doubt the NRR 27 spec. The biggest problem is that the electronic did not work on the one I received. For people who don’t know what electronic earmuffs do: they have a microphone to pick up sound and send it to the speaker in earmuffs so that you can hear conversations when there is no loud noise. When the noise goes beyond certain level, the circuitry should automatically cut off to protect your hearing. (I used to think that electronic earmuffs worked the same way as noise cancellation headphones.)Amazon provided me easy return. But I decided not to try another pair due to cheapiness of the general build quality.

As noted in some other reviews, this unit has dual amplifiers (one in each head piece). Takes AAA batteries. Are easy to load. Volume control on each ear. They do nice in attenuating but great in hearing folks talking around you when on.Of particular note, the fit better than some others I’ve tried (average size guy’s head), not overly tight on the fitting.

The electronics failed after 18 months of very little use. I replaced the batteries, but still no sound coming out.Save your money, and get a better brand.

Works nice. Appears to be a nice value. Have not had a chance to use on the gun range yet

These Radians electronic earmuffs are given an NRR of 27 by the manufacturer, which is absolutely phenomenal, so I purchased a pair.I then used them at the outdoor shooting range, but noticed that nearby gunfire was quite loud and uncomfortable. To me, that was unacceptable, so I then payed much more money for a pair of Peltor 97039 Tactical 7S Hearing Protectors, even though they give a much lower manufacturer rating of 25 NRR.So why did I purchase earmuffs with a *lower* NRR? Because I knew that Peltor is a highly respected company, and actually gives true NRR values, rather than trumped up ones; and if all Peltor can get is 25 NRR with their earmuffs, then that is pretty much the highest possible. Well, I was correct: With the Peltor earmuffs I now no longer flinch at nearby gunfire, and my ears do not ring after I leave the range. The 25 NRR Peltor’s may cost over one hundred and thirty bucks, and these “27 NRR” Radians only thirty bucks, but how much is your hearing worth?

Not thinking of spending allot for earmuffs for my work. But when I seen an electronic one, I said just try it. They depth of the ear cushion is too shallow. I have studs in my ear and they touch the inside foam, causing some discomfort. Using the electronic amplification, cuts in and out constantly even for wind and my radio sounds. Can get annoying. It amplifies normally though. Wish they just added a thicker ear cushion.
